Let’s talk about a tool that should be in every LEGO fan’s arsenal. It’s free, it’s stupidly easy, and once you start using it you’ll never buy LEGO without it again.
It’s called Rakuten. Yes, that name. We’ll get to that.

Wait, What Even Is Rakuten?
Rakuten is a cash back platform. You shop through their site or browser extension, they get a referral commission from the retailer, and they split it with you. That’s the whole model. You’re not paying anything extra. The store pays Rakuten for sending you there, and Rakuten passes a chunk of that back to your pocket.
It sounds almost too simple. It is that simple. That’s the point.
And yes, Rakuten. It’s a Japanese word meaning “optimism” or “fun.” The company is actually one of the largest e-commerce and tech conglomerates in the world, based in Tokyo, with their fingers in everything from banking to professional sports teams. In the US they rebranded from Ebates (which is the name most people knew) to Rakuten back in 2019. Is it a weird name for an American cash back app? Absolutely. Does it matter when it’s saving you money on LEGO? Not even a little.

Why LEGO Fans Specifically Need This
Most cash back apps work across hundreds of stores. But for LEGO fans, Rakuten has a particular superpower. LEGO.com is always on there.
On a normal day, shopping directly on LEGO’s website gets you 2.5% cash back through Rakuten. Not life-changing on a single purchase, but over a year of LEGO shopping? It adds up fast.
But here’s where it gets genuinely exciting. Rakuten runs elevated cash back promotions, sometimes spiking to 8%, 10%, even higher. And today is a perfect example. Right now Rakuten is offering up to 16% cash back at LEGO.com. Today only.
16%.
On top of whatever sale LEGO is already running.
The Stack Is the Move
Here’s how I’m using it today. LEGO is running a promotion where if you hit a spending threshold you unlock a Bunny GWP (Gift With Purchase). So I picked up a handful of sets that were already discounted 20 to 30%. I hit the threshold, I’m getting the Bunny. And then on top of all of that, 16% back through Rakuten.
Do the math. 30 to 46% off when you stack the sale price with the cash back.
That is not a typo. That is just using the tools correctly.
It’s Not Just LEGO
Rakuten works at hundreds of major retailers. We’re talking Target, Best Buy, Nike, Macy’s, Sephora, Old Navy, Petco, Home Depot, Kohl’s and on and on. If you’re buying anything online it’s worth checking Rakuten first.
Fair warning though. Amazon and Walmart are not part of Rakuten. Walmart was until very recently, which stings a little. Amazon has never played ball. So for deals at those two giants you’re on your own. But for everything else the browser extension makes it effortless. It just pops up, tells you cash back is available, you click activate and shop normally. Done.
When to Go Big With Rakuten
The 2.5% base rate at LEGO.com is nice, but the real moves happen when Rakuten runs elevated promotions. A few dates to mark on your calendar.
May the 4th is coming up fast. LEGO always runs Star Wars sales and Rakuten almost always spikes their cash back rate around the same time. Last year I stocked up hard on Star Wars sets with the two promos stacking together. I am absolutely doing it again this year.
Black Friday is another massive one. LEGO runs some of their best deals of the year, Rakuten usually matches the energy with elevated rates, and if you time it right you’re walking away with serious savings.
The pattern is consistent. Whenever LEGO is running a big promotion it’s worth checking if Rakuten has bumped up their rate. More often than not, they have.

How to Get Started
- Go to rakuten.com/r/JFERRA321?eeid=28187 and create a free account. Using that link gets you a $50 bonus when you hit your first cash back threshold, so definitely worth it.
- Install the browser extension.
- Shop like you normally would. The extension alerts you when cash back is available.
- Get paid quarterly via PayPal or check.
That’s it. There is genuinely no catch here. Rakuten makes money when you shop, you get money back for shopping you were already going to do. Optimism, indeed.
Final Word
LEGO is never cheap. That’s just the reality we live in as fans of the world’s greatest plastic bricks. But between timing sales, hitting GWP thresholds, and stacking Rakuten cash back on top, you can dramatically reduce what you’re actually paying.
Today I’m getting 30 to 46% off a haul that includes sets I already wanted. That’s not luck. That’s having the right tools.
Get Rakuten. Use it every time. Thank me at May the 4th.
