LEGO 40649 Up-Scaled Minifigure Review: The Classic Guy Has a Secret

The original LEGO minifigure has been around since 1978. Everybody knows that face. So when LEGO announced they were building a version about 6 times the size. No IP, no license, just the classic red and blue guy. We figured it was either going to be a novelty gift set or something genuinely worth building. Turned out to be the second one. Also, it has a secret.

The Build Experience

654 pieces across a straightforward build. This one is noticeably easier than the Up-Scaled Darth Vader (75461). About 370 fewer pieces and no fabric accessories. It builds fast, the techniques are approachable, and the result is immediately recognizable. Head, arms, torso, legs, all come together in a way that feels satisfying without being complicated. StudSon tackled most of this himself, which tells you something about the difficulty level. The hat is a separate build that sits on top and here is the good part: the hat opens.

Inside the hat sits a standard-sized classic minifigure. The bit is that the tiny guy is the one “piloting” the big one, sitting at the controls. It is a silly, delightful detail that LEGO absolutely did not have to include and completely earns its place in the set. StudSon immediately assigned names and a backstory. StudMom laughed out loud when she saw it.

StudDad’s Take

Straightforward build, clean result. The classic minifigure design is iconic for a reason and this holds up at scale. No stickers, no complicated techniques, just solid construction that produces something you actually want to display. At 654 pieces for $59.99 the value is fine. You are paying for the concept as much as the parts, and the concept delivers.

That said, $59.99 is not a day one number for a set that has no IP and no character behind it. Compare it to the Vader version at $99.99 and you are getting significantly less set for not that much less money. The hidden pilot minifigure is a fun touch but it is still a simple blank-face figure with red and blue parts. If you see it at 20% off, that is your moment. I would not think twice at $47 or $48.

StudSon’s Take

StudSon built the whole thing himself, start to finish. For a 654-piece set that is not a small deal, and he was pretty proud of it. When his friends came over the first thing he did was show it off. They all thought it looked cool. He was especially into how easy the arms and legs move. Kid wants to pose everything, so that matters more to him than whether it sits nicely on a shelf.

The secret minifig in the hat got him going. He named the little guy Steve, decided Steve is the one piloting the big figure, and spent a solid afternoon staging him next to the Vader set with some kind of standoff scenario. His official score: 9 out of 10. The one point he docked was because the big guy does not come with an accessory like Vader’s lightsaber. His call.

The two of them on the shelf together is a great look. Classic LEGO vs. the Dark Side. The size difference between the two sets is obvious here. Vader is bigger, heavier, and more complex. But the classic guy holds his own.

Should You Buy It?

Yes, but not at full price. $59.99 for a 654-piece set with a fun gimmick is reasonable, but LEGO discounts this one regularly. Watch for 20% off and buy it then. Around $47 to $48 this becomes an easy call for any age. It works as a kids room display piece, a desk piece, or a gift for any adult who grew up building LEGO. The hidden pilot is worth it alone as a conversation starter. Just do not rush to pay full price when the sale price is right around the corner.
