LEGO 75461 Up-Scaled Darth Vader Review: The One We Did Not Know We Needed

We are a Darth Vader household. StudDad has collected pretty much every Vader set LEGO has put out over the past decade. The helmet, the busts, the sets he comes in. When LEGO announced a full up-scaled minifigure version, the only question was how fast we could get it to our door. The short answer: very fast.

The Build Experience

Ten bags, 1,028 pieces, and honestly it went faster than we expected. The build process is unlike anything we had done before. LEGO basically engineered a giant minifigure from scratch, which means a lot of techniques you have never seen in a standard set. The torso has real structure to it, the head snaps together in a way that feels satisfying, and the lightsaber blade is this chunky transparent red brick assembly that looks even better in person than in photos. There are a handful of stickers, chest panel details mostly, and it is what it is. Everything else is printed or molded. The fabric cape comes folded in the box and it is genuinely impressive up close. We will get to the cape in a minute.

StudDad’s Take

I have the helmet. I have the bust. I have the UCS sets. I was not sure this needed to exist. I was wrong. The engineering on this thing is clever. It genuinely looks like a minifigure scaled up, not just a statue. The posable arms and legs actually work, the head turns, and the right arm locks into two different lightsaber positions which sounds minor but makes a real difference for display. Standing at 11 inches tall, it commands a shelf.

The stickers annoyed me. There are not many, but on a $100 set I would rather see prints. That is my only real complaint. The fabric cape is thick, drapes correctly, and sized appropriately for the figure. As you will see in a second it is absolutely comical next to a standard minifig cape. I had to look that up. $99.99 is fair for what you get. If it hits 20% off I would tell anyone on the fence to move immediately, but I bought this at full price and I do not regret it.

StudSon’s Take

I could not stop talking about this set the entire time we were building it. Darth Vader is the coolest character in all of Star Wars and now we have a GIANT one. Like, it is taller than my arm! The lightsaber is so big and red and it looks amazing on the shelf. I keep posing it differently every day. Sometimes I put it next to my regular Darth Vader minifig to show how big it is and it is SO funny.

My favorite part is that the helmet is built piece by piece and you can see all the little details. It does not look like a toy. It looks like a display piece. My friends came over and the first thing everyone did was pick it up and try to swing the lightsaber. StudDad said to stop but he was smiling. One thing I wish it had was a sound feature because the breathing would be really cool. But still. I give it 10 out of 10. Nothing lost any points because it is Darth Vader and it is perfect.

Should You Buy It?

If you are a Star Wars fan at any level, yes. If you are a Vader collector, this is not optional. You already know you need it. For the rest of you: $99.99 is a fair price for 1,028 pieces and a display piece this well-engineered. LEGO regularly discounts Star Wars sets 20% around the holidays and major sale events, so a patient buyer can grab this around $79. At that price it is a no-brainer gift for any LEGO Star Wars fan aged 10 and up. Do not sleep on it if you see it drop.

One upgrade worth considering: a light kit for the lightsaber. Third-party options made specifically for 75461 exist and the right kit can make that red blade glow. LocoLee makes one on Amazon that fits the 75461 without needing to fully disassemble it.
