LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine Review (77256)

Back to the Future was already part of the rotation in our house before this set came out. We had watched all three movies together, so when LEGO dropped a Speed Champions DeLorean with Doc and Marty in the box, this was never a question of if. It was day one.

The Build Experience

357 pieces, two build modes depending on which movie you love most. The base car and interior come together cleanly, and watching the DeLorean take shape piece by piece actually holds up well for a Speed Champions build. There is a lot going on for the size. The flux capacitor area and the engine bay behind the seats have real detail packed into a small space.

A few moments in the build are genuinely fiddly. The cable that wraps around the exterior of the car takes some patience to seat correctly, and the translucent teal accent pieces around the body snap into place but do not feel locked in. They hold fine on display. During play they are a different story. We lost one to the carpet more than once. Nothing falls off permanently, but you should know going in that a few pieces on this one need a little more respect than usual.

StudDad’s Take

$27.99 for a Speed Champions set is already a reasonable ask. For this one specifically it feels like a deal even at full retail, which is not something I say often. The minifigs alone are better than anything you will get in a comparably priced set. Doc Brown with the wild hair, Marty in the red puffer vest. LEGO did not cut corners on the printing detail.

The two build modes are a genuine selling point, not a marketing gimmick. The set gives you enough parts to configure it as the original movie car or the Part II flying version. You cannot display both at once without buying a second set, which at $27.99 is actually a conversation worth having. I already plan to grab another one on sale so we can have both versions out at the same time.

My one real complaint is the fragile exterior pieces. The teal translucents and that exterior cable look great but do not hold up well under active handling. For a set sitting on a shelf this is not an issue. For a set that a 10-year-old is going to pick up and recreate scenes with, expect to reattach things. That is a design problem, not a build quality problem, and it is the only mark against an otherwise excellent set.

StudSon’s Take

He had seen all three movies, so he came into this one already invested. Since we finished the build it has been doing laps through our LEGO city nonstop. Hitting 88 MPH, taking off, repeat. As of today it is his favorite car in his collection, which is genuinely saying something. That kid has a lot of LEGO cars. He gave it 10 out of 10. The translucent pieces that fall off during play were his only complaint, and even that was not enough to cost it a point.

Should You Buy It?

Yes. At $27.99 this is one of the stronger Speed Champions releases in recent memory and the IP makes it easy to recommend to any family that has seen the movies. If your kids know who Doc Brown is, they will know exactly what they are looking at and they will want to play with it immediately.

If you find it on sale at 20% off ($22 or less), consider buying two. You get one to display in each movie configuration, and the second build is fast enough that it does not feel like a chore. That gets you both versions on a shelf indefinitely for under $50, and that is genuinely good value for what you are getting.
