A brick-built Shenron is a genuinely smart first move. He is the single most recognizable image in Dragon Ball, he does not need a scene around him to make sense, and a coiled dragon is exactly the kind of sculptural build LEGO Icons does well. Full disclosure, same as always. StudSon is not a Dragon Ball kid and neither am I, so nobody in this house is waiting on this one for sentimental reasons. I will probably still pick it up, because the first set of a brand new theme is always a fun thing to own. There is something about a launch set that later sets never quite have. But I do not need to be a fan to see why this matters. Dragon Ball is one of a small handful of franchises that genuinely spans generations. There are parents who watched Goku on Toonami after school now watching Super with their own kids. That is exactly the overlap LEGO has been chasing with everything from Icons to the 18+ label.
The set itself looks like the right call too. A coiled Shenron with the Dragon Balls at the base is the one image that reads instantly to a fan and still looks like an interesting sculpture to someone who has never seen an episode. That is a hard balance and it is why this will sell.
My honest advice at this stage: nothing to do yet. The release is reportedly November 1, it is unconfirmed, and there is no pre-order to beat. If LEGO reveals it soon, New York Comic-Con on October 8 to 11 is the obvious stage, since Brick Fanatics has pointed to the show’s big Dragon Ball booth as a likely venue.
