LEGO 21363 The Goonies Review: Goonies Never Say Die

Some sets you buy because the price-per-piece math works. This one you buy because of what it means to you. The Goonies is one of StudMom’s favorite movies growing up, the kind of movie you genuinely have to wonder if a studio would even greenlight today. StudSon has seen it enough times because of her that he is a fan too. When LEGO announced this set, there was no debate in this house. It was happening.

StudMom does not build many sets. She built this one, alongside StudSon, and by all accounts she loved every minute of it.

The Build Experience

2,912 pieces is a big build on paper, but StudMom and StudSon both said it went by surprisingly fast. Part of that is the format: the Inferno is built as a long horizontal cutaway, broken into distinct scenes rather than one continuous structure, so there is a natural sense of progress and payoff as each section comes together. The organ pipes, the wishing well, One-Eyed Willie’s skeleton at the treasure hoard, the cave slide with Data and Brand. Every section is its own small scene from the movie, and building through them plays almost like watching the film again.

They quoted lines back and forth as they worked through it, matching each build section to the corresponding scene. That is the kind of build experience you do not get from a generic modular set, and it is exactly why a licensed set like this earns its price tag when the license actually means something to the builder.

StudDad’s Take

$329.99 is a real number and I am not going to pretend otherwise. This is not an impulse buy. But for the right buyer, meaning someone who actually has a connection to this movie, the value case is there. 2,912 pieces and 13 minifigures, including the full Goonies crew, the Fratellis, and One-Eyed Willie, is a strong lineup for a set at this scale. The detail work across every scene is real, not filler.

My advice: this set launched back in November 2025, so if you have not bought it yet, there is no reason to pay full retail right now. LEGO runs site-wide double VIP points events a handful of times a year, usually clustered around June and July, then again in the fall around October, Black Friday, and December. Watch LEGO’s offers and promotions page and time this purchase to land during a double points window or a gift-with-purchase promo. On a $329.99 set, that is real value back in your pocket, and since it is not a limited early-window release, waiting for the right promo costs you nothing.

StudMom and StudSon’s Take

They built this one together, which does not happen often since StudMom is not usually the one at the table with the instructions. She said she loved it start to finish, and the pace surprised her given how large the box looked going in. StudSon knew the movie well enough to call out scenes before they finished each section, and the two of them spent the whole build trading lines from the film. I lost count of how many times I heard “Hey you guysssss!” come from the other room. Both gave it a 10 out of 10 without hesitation. This is a set that works as both a serious display piece and something you can actually sit down and build as a family, and that combination is rare at this scale.

Easter Eggs Worth Looking For

LEGO packed a lot of small nods into this one, and StudMom and StudSon kept spotting new ones as they built. A wanted poster tucked into one of the cave sections is dated 4/6/82, a nod to the timeline the film itself is set against. The candy machine hidden in one of the interior rooms is stocked with a printed pack labeled Gut Bubble, a playful original detail rather than a direct movie reference, but exactly the kind of small joke that rewards a close look. The organ pipes are built to actually sit above the skeleton keyboard the way they do in the booby trap scene, and the treasure room is loaded with printed coin and gem pieces scattered the way Willie’s hoard looks in the film. It is worth going section by section after the build is done just to see what you missed the first time through.

As the movie itself puts it: “Goonies never say die.” That is basically the design philosophy behind this whole set.

Should You Buy It?

If you grew up on this movie, yes, without question. This is a set built for a very specific kind of nostalgia, and it delivers on it completely. The minifig lineup alone, the full Goonies crew plus the Fratellis and One-Eyed Willie, makes this a genuine collector’s piece regardless of what you think of the build itself.

If you have no connection to the movie, this is a much harder sell at $329.99. The build quality and detail are there either way, but the price only makes full sense once the nostalgia is part of the equation.

Time your purchase to a double points event or gift-with-purchase promo if you can, and route it through Rakuten regardless. Neither costs you anything and both put real money back on a set this size.
