LEGO 43022 Lewis Hamilton Helmet Review

We already have the Charles Leclerc helmet (43014) on the shelf, so picking up LEGO 43022, the Lewis Hamilton version, was really just a matter of time. I will be honest, I do not remember much about building the Leclerc helmet. This one I remember. It was a genuinely more enjoyable build from start to finish.

Building LEGO 43022

884 pieces, and this one puts a lot of different building techniques to work getting the visor, the vents, and the curved shell shape right. That variety is what set it apart from the Leclerc build for me. It never felt repetitive, and there were a handful of sections that genuinely made me stop and appreciate how the designers solved a tricky shape with LEGO parts. If you have built a few of these Icons helmets already and started to feel like they blur together, this one breaks that pattern.

The yellow and red livery also just photographs better than I expected. It stands out on a shelf next to the red Leclerc helmet in a way that makes the pair genuinely more interesting to look at side by side than either one on its own.

StudDad’s Take

If you already own the Leclerc helmet and are trying to decide whether the Hamilton one is worth adding, yes. If you are a Ferrari fan who has to pick just one, this is the one I would tell you to get. The build itself is simply more fun, with more technique variety than its sibling, and the finished piece stands out more on a shelf.

There is also a real-world case for it right now. As of this writing, Hamilton is having the better season of the two Ferrari drivers, sitting third in the championship with 191 points against Leclerc’s fifth place and 155 points. That is not the reason to buy a LEGO helmet on its own, but if you are choosing between two drivers and want the one actually delivering results this season, Hamilton is it.

I picked this one up at 20% off, which is close to what you should expect to pay. At $89.99 MSRP it is a fair price for 884 pieces and a display piece this well designed, but like most sets in this line it does go on sale with some regularity, so there is no harm in waiting for a discount if you are not in a rush.

StudSon’s Take

He was fairly neutral on the build itself, nothing about it grabbed him the way it grabbed me. He did make it clear that between the two helmets, he likes the look of the yellow Hamilton one better than the red Leclerc one. Beyond that, this was more of a StudDad set than a StudSon set.

Both helmets together, Leclerc in red and Hamilton in yellow. The pair looks better as a set than either does alone.

Should You Buy It?

Yes. Between the two Ferrari helmets in this line, this is the stronger build and the stronger display piece. If you already have the Leclerc helmet, this one completes the pair. If you are starting from scratch and can only pick one, start here.
